Potential Treatment for Peanut Allergy on Horizon
By Dr. Thomas A. Lupoli
Approximately 80% of children diagnosed with peanut allergy will have the allergy for the rest of their lives. Accidental exposure to food allergens accounts for a considerable number of life-threatening reactions and fatalities each year in our country. Unfortunately, there are currently no available treatments to prevent these food reactions other than strict dietary avoidance.
Tolerance to food allergies is considered the “holy grail” of allergy research. Cutting edge research is now looking at ways to induce tolerance in food allergic individuals. A recent study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology belongs to a growing body of evidence that suggests tolerance to food allergens may indeed be possible. Although this treatment is likely years away from clinical application in Allergists’ offices, we remain hopeful that one day we may be able offer a viable treatment to prevent allergic food reactions in children and adults!
