CDC: Asthma on the Rise in U.S.
By: Dr. Thomas Lupoli
This past Tuesday, May 3rd, marked the 13th annual World Asthma Day and the release of a new report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reaffirming that asthma in the United States is on the rise. Between 2001 and 2009 4.3 million people were newly diagnosed with asthma. That translates to 1 in 12 Americans having asthma as of 2009. This report also illustrates that the burden of asthma is higher in children than adults– with 9.6% of American children having asthma compared to 7.7% of adults.
This CDC report underscores that asthma is an extremely prevalent condition in the US. While there is no “cure” for asthma, it can be controlled with inhaled mediations and avoidance of allergic triggers and respiratory irritants. Despite many significant advances in asthma therapy and our understanding of the mechanisms contributing to asthma, it remains a very serious and life-long condition. 3500 people unnecessarily die of asthma attacks each year in our country and unfortunately Jacksonville has an unproportionally high rate of asthma related deaths. If you or a loved-one have asthma or suspect asthma, I strongly urge you to see your primary care provider or an asthma specialist for a formal asthma evaluation/ asthma screening.
