Allergy Myth of the Month: I can’t be allergic to my “hypo-allergenic” dog, can I?
We hear this question quite a bit, and the answer is YES!
Researchers from the Henry Ford Health System (Detroit) and Georgia Health Sciences University conducted a study in 2011 that shed light on this very question. In the study, the researchers measured the levels of major dog allergen (Can f 1) in homes inhabited by “hypoallergenic” dogs and homes with non-hypoallergenic breeds. The study found no significant difference in the levels of dog allergen in homes with hypoallergenic dogs compared to other homes.
Many “hypo-allergenic” breeds come with a hefty price tag of a thousand of dollars, or more. The fact is, some breeds may be more allergenic than others but none are truly “nonallergenic.” Pet allergens (dander) are derived from airborne skin and saliva proteins. Even hairless dogs and cats shed a significant amount of dander that can cause considerable symptoms in individuals with sensitivities to dogs or cats.
